Discover Ilha Grande
Just a few hours from the city of Rio de Janeiro (160 km) lies one of the most spectacular natural regions in Brazil: THE COSTA VERDE, a stretch of Atlantic rainforest, mountains and beaches that runs between Rio de Janeiro and Paraty.
In the heart of this region is ILHA GRANDE, considered by many travelers one of the most beautiful destinations in the country. Ilha Grande is located within the Angra dos Reis archipelago, which has more than 300 islands.
With no cars, no roads and surrounded by some of the most impressive beaches in the South Atlantic, ILHA GRANDE is part of one of the best-preserved Atlantic Forest areas on the planet, internationally recognized for its extraordinary biodiversity.
UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) declared Ilha Grande and the neighboring town of Paraty a World Heritage Site in 2019 (https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1308)

Unlike other beach tourist destinations, you don’t come to Ilha Grande only to spend a few days in front of the sea. You come to hike trails, sail between islands, discover Caiçara communities and experience a much more direct contact with nature.
There are no roads or cars on the island. Most movement is done on foot or by sea, following a way of life that for centuries has been part of the native Caiçara communities that live on the island.
This combination of jungle, mountain and sea has made it possible to preserve some of the most spectacular landscapes of the Costa Verde, with crystal-clear beaches, trails surrounded by nature and exceptional biodiversity.
However, one of the biggest surprises for those who visit Ilha Grande is discovering that not the whole island offers the same experience.
While Vila do Abraão concentrates much of the tourist infrastructure, there are other, much lesser-known regions where nature is still the protagonist and the rhythm of life is still set by the sea.
Understanding these differences is essential to choose what kind of experience you want to live during your trip.

Planning the trip
Getting from Rio de Janeiro to Ilha Grande takes on average between 3 and 4 hours in total, depending on the means of transport you choose.
The journey is divided into two stages: the trip by land to the mainland pier and the boat crossing to the island.
The distance is only about 160 km, but it depends a lot on how you travel by land and which port you choose to take the ferry.
Clearly the fastest option is to do the whole trip by private transport (car + speedboat), but it is also the most expensive. This option reduces the total trip to approximately 2.5 hours.
Public transport (bus + ferry) is the cheapest but also the slowest.
The bus can take 3 hours depending on which pier you are heading to, and the ferry takes approximately 45 min.
To that you must add the transfer time between the bus terminals and the port and the wait according to the ferry departure times.

The answer depends on the kind of experience you are looking for.
Unlike other beach destinations, Ilha Grande can be visited all year round.
Each season offers different landscapes, activities and experiences.
- Summer (December to March)
It is the season with the most tourist activity.
The days are long, temperatures are higher and the island receives visitors from all over Brazil and abroad.
It is the best time for those who enjoy a livelier atmosphere and a greater range of activities.
New Year and the first days of January are the days of highest demand and highest rates.
Rain falls, as in any tropical climate, in the late afternoons.
- Autumn (April to June)
For many frequent travelers, one of the most pleasant times of the year begins.
Temperatures remain warm, rains decrease and the beaches regain a much calmer pace.
Sea clarity usually improves considerably. Marine life grows, and whales and dolphins arrive in our seas.
Rates are usually much more convenient.
- Winter (July to September)
Contrary to what many people imagine, winter in Ilha Grande is far from cold.
The days are usually sunny, temperatures pleasant (between 20 and 25 degrees) and nature keeps all its protagonism.
It is an especially recommended time for those seeking tranquility, hiking, snorkeling and diving.
It is also one of the best times to watch the marine life that frequents the region.
- Spring (October and November)
The island begins to get ready for high season. The days are a bit rainier because the vegetation is especially lush, waiting for that water.
In short… If you are looking for activity and more tourist movement, summer may be the best option.
If you prioritize nature, tranquility, less crowded beaches and a more authentic experience, many travelers consider autumn and winter the most interesting seasons to discover Ilha Grande.
These periods also come with the best rates of the year.

Although it is a single island, the experience can be very different depending on the region you choose to stay in.
In simple terms, most travelers discover Ilha Grande through two main areas connected to the mainland by public ferries. The island can be reached by public transport, on Flex Boats departing from:
- Jacareí and Mangaratiba, heading to the central area: Abraão
- Angra dos Reis: from where you can head to the Lagoa Verde, Araçatiba and Praia Vermelha area.
- Vila do Abraão: the main gateway to Ilha Grande
Most boats connecting Ilha Grande with the mainland arrive at Vila do Abraão, the island’s main tourist and commercial center.
see ferry schedules (https://objetivaturismo.com.br/)
From ports such as Conceição de Jacareí or Mangaratiba, thousands of travelers arrive every year attracted by its tourist infrastructure, restaurants, shops and wide range of excursions. It is also the only area of the island with nightlife - For many people, Abraão is their first contact with Ilha Grande.
It is the busiest and most populated place on the island.
Araçatiba and Praia Vermelha: the quietest and most preserved side of the island
However, there is another way to discover Ilha Grande.
From Angra dos Reis, public boats depart that connect directly with communities such as Araçatiba and Praia Vermelha, located in one of the most natural and preserved regions of the island.

Here the experience is different. The beaches are calmer, contact with nature is more intense and it is still possible to live alongside Caiçara fishing communities that maintain a historical relationship with the sea and the Atlantic Forest.
For many travelers, this region represents the most authentic and least known Ilha Grande.
Rest of the island: of course the island has many more beaches and regions besides Abraão and the Araçatiba area.
There are very famous beaches such as Aventureiro and Lopes Mendes on the ocean side of the island; it so happens that these beaches cannot be reached by public transport from the mainland. If you want to stay at a beach not mentioned in this summary, we recommend you ask your chosen accommodation to advise you on the best way to get there.

There is no single answer, it will always depend on the purpose of your trip.
Abraão is usually the best option for those looking for more tourist activity, commerce, gastronomic variety and nightlife.
Areas such as Araçatiba and Praia Vermelha tend to attract travelers who prioritize tranquility, nature, trails, less crowded and less noisy beaches and an experience more connected with local culture.
Here the plan is not usually to go shopping or enjoy nightlife. The experience revolves around the sea, the jungle, nature watching, water sports, hiking and the unhurried pace of the coastal communities.
That is why this region is especially valued by couples, families and travelers who want to disconnect from everyday noise to connect with one of the most extraordinary natural environments in Brazil.
There are also dozens more beaches to stay at, especially along the coasts facing the mainland. But if you decide to stay somewhere public transport does not reach, you should ask your accommodation how to get there. They will surely be able to send you a private boat from the nearest port on the mainland.

Of course not. Although it is an island with no bridges or roads, getting to Ilha Grande is much easier than many people imagine.
Every day hundreds of travelers arrive from Rio de Janeiro using a combination of land transport and regular boats that connect the mainland with different points of the island.
Depending on the region where you decide to stay, there are different access alternatives that let you reach both Vila do Abraão and other communities located in quieter, more preserved areas of Ilha Grande, such as Araçatiba and Praia Vermelha.
Most visitors depart from Rio de Janeiro and complete the journey in a few hours, combining bus, private transfer or car (for the land leg) with regular sea services (Flex Boat).

There is something most visitors don’t know. When talking about Ilha Grande, almost all the attention is focused on Vila do Abraão, the island’s main gateway.
But Ilha Grande is much bigger, more diverse and more authentic than it seems and than what everyone knows when they arrive in the region.
Far from the bustle of Abraão’s center, there are small Caiçara communities (a mix of locals, Africans and Portuguese) where families descended from the island’s original inhabitants still live, surrounded by jungle, sea and a way of life deeply connected to nature.
Areas far from the commercial center, such as the area where our pousadas are located (Praia Vermelha and Araçatiba), offer a completely different experience: calmer beaches, trails surrounded by Atlantic Forest, crystal-clear water, a rich local culture and a pace of life that seems to have stopped in time.
This is the most Authentic and Natural Ilha Grande. This is the true “other side of the island” that many still don’t know.
And the most surprising thing is that these regions are still accessible by public sea transport, easily connecting travelers with the most preserved and authentic side of Ilha Grande.

Although many travelers believe that once settled in Abraão it is complicated to see other regions of Ilha Grande, there are in fact several ways to reach communities such as Praia Vermelha or Praia Grande de Araçatiba.
1. Private Taxi Boat:
It is the fastest and most comfortable alternative. Private boats allow you to travel directly between Abraão and different beaches on the island, adapting schedules and routes to each traveler’s needs.
Its main advantage is flexibility, although it is usually also the most expensive option.
In Abraão there are many travel agencies that can provide this service, or if you are staying at our pousadas you can request it from our reservations center.
2. Combining Flex Boat and regular sea transport.
Another alternative is to triangulate using the public Flex Boat services that connect Abraão with Angra dos Reis and, from there, take another boat to Araçatiba or Praia Vermelha.
Although it requires an intermediate connection on the mainland, it is an economical option used by many travelers who want to combine different regions of the island during the same stay.
3. Using a boat excursion to get around
For many travelers this is the most practical and attractive option.
Numerous excursions departing from Abraão — such as Island Tour, Half Tour, Gruta do Acaiá or Paradise Islands — run along the western coast of Ilha Grande and pass by regions near Araçatiba and Praia Vermelha.
Many agencies allow you to arrange to finish the tour in these communities instead of returning to Abraão, turning an excursion into a transfer and a tourist experience at the same time.

Although many people visit Ilha Grande on a one-day trip from the mainland, most travelers agree that a single day is not enough to discover everything the island has to offer.
Between beaches, trails, boat trips, snorkeling, diving and small coastal communities, Ilha Grande is a destination meant to be enjoyed without rushing.
For a first visit, the ideal is usually to stay between 3 and 5 nights.
This lets you see some of the best-known beaches, take sea trips and begin discovering different regions of the island.
However, those looking for a deeper experience connected with nature usually opt for longer stays.
The island has a particularity: the longer you stay, the easier it is to adapt to its rhythm and discover places that many visitors never get to know.

Many travelers choose to stay in a single region of the island throughout their stay. However, those with several days can have a much more complete experience by combining different areas of Ilha Grande.
An increasingly popular option is to split the stay between Vila do Abraão and quieter regions such as Praia Vermelha or Praia Grande de Araçatiba.
This way you can see two very different faces of the island.
On one hand, Abraão lets you enjoy the greatest tourist infrastructure, excursions, shops, nightlife and services, and on the other, communities such as Praia Vermelha or Praia Grande de Araçatiba offer an experience more connected with nature, less crowded beaches, hiking, water sports and a closer relationship with local Caiçara culture.
The interesting thing is that these regions also have regular sea connections from the mainland, which makes it easy to organize a combined stay without major logistical complications.

Experiences on the Island
One of the great advantages of Ilha Grande is that every traveler can live a different experience.
Some people arrive attracted by its paradise beaches. Others look for trails surrounded by Atlantic Forest, nautical activities or simply to disconnect from the fast pace of big cities.
Whatever the reason for your trip, the island offers much more than sun and beach.
With more than 100 beaches spread along its coast, Ilha Grande offers landscapes for every taste.
From long stretches of white sand like Lopes Mendes or Aventureiro, to small beaches hidden in the jungle like Itaguaçu beach, many of them reachable only on foot or by sea.
Each region of the island has its own personality and discovering them is part of the experience.

Perhaps the activity most valued by many travelers is also the simplest.
Sitting in front of the sea.
Listening to the sounds of the jungle.
Walking without hurry.
Watching the sun set over the bay.
In an age when everything seems to go faster and faster, Ilha Grande remains one of those places where time passes differently.
And many times, that ends up being what is remembered most about the trip.

Of course there is! And perhaps that is one of the biggest surprises many travelers get when they discover the island for the first time.
The best-known image of Ilha Grande is usually associated with Vila do Abraão, the island’s main gateway and arrival point for most visitors. Much of the tourist infrastructure, restaurants, shops and excursions are concentrated there.
However, Abraão represents only a small part of Ilha Grande.
Beyond the tourist center, the island keeps extensive areas where nature is still the protagonist and where the rhythm of life is still set by the sea, the jungle and the traditions of the Caiçara communities.
In regions such as Praia Vermelha and Praia Grande de Araçatiba, the experience changes completely.
Here there are no shopping streets or nightlife.
Days usually begin with the sound of birds, continue along trails surrounded by Atlantic Forest and end in front of the sea watching the sunset over the bay.
The beaches are calmer, there are fewer visitors and contact with nature is part of the daily experience.
On our website you will find three pousada options that will help you live this kind of experience

The beaches are calmer, there are fewer visitors and contact with nature is part of the daily experience.
On our website you will find three pousada options that will help you live this kind of experience
One of the greatest attractions of these regions is that they still keep a strong local identity.
Many of the families living here are descendants of the island’s traditional inhabitants and maintain a historical relationship with fishing, the sea and the jungle.
For those who want to understand the true essence of Ilha Grande, this connection with local culture is usually as valuable as its natural landscapes.

For many travelers, yes.
In fact, one of the most frequent recommendations among those who already know the island is to combine different regions during the same stay.
Spending a few days in Abraão lets you see the main tourist center of Ilha Grande.
Complementing the experience with a stay at Praia Vermelha or Praia Grande de Araçatiba, among others, lets you discover a completely different side of the island: calmer, more natural and deeply connected with its surroundings.
Because one of the great riches of Ilha Grande is precisely that.
The possibility of living two very different experiences within the same destination.
And discovering that, behind the island everyone knows, there is still another Ilha Grande that many travelers have yet to discover.

Unlike other destinations where most activities take place inside shopping malls, theme parks or enclosed spaces, here nature is the protagonist.

With more than 100 beaches spread along its coast, choosing the prettiest on Ilha Grande is not an easy task.
Each one has a different personality and offers a unique experience. Some are famous for their long white sand, others for their transparent water ideal for snorkeling, and many remain practically hidden in the Atlantic Forest.
Rather than asking which is the best beach, it is better to ask what kind of beach you are looking for.
VERY IMPORTANT TO KEEP IN MIND when planning your trip:
1 - THE OCEAN SIDE has long beaches with waves. Most of its beaches are almost virgin, with no accommodation or very rustic accommodation, and no public transport.
For example: Praia Dois Rios - Parnaioca - Aventureiro
2 - THE BAY OF ANGRA DOS REIS (facing the mainland) is the whole part of the island that faces the mainland. It has services and pousadas along its long coastline, with smaller beaches and practically no waves.
Vermelha - Itaguaçu - Araçatibinha - Praia Grande de Araçatiba - Longa - Bananal - Sítio Forte - Saco do Céu - Freguesia de Santana - Pouso - Praia da Júlia - Praia Preta
Among others…

One of the advantages of Ilha Grande is that different beaches and attractions can be visited from different regions of the island.
That is why, before choosing where to stay, it is worth thinking about which places you would like to see during your trip.
Staying in Abraão
Abraão is usually an excellent base for those who want to visit Lopes Mendes, Lagoa Azul and many of the best-known trails on the island.
It also concentrates a wide range of sea and land excursions.
Abraão is the only place on the island with a commercial center and nightlife. That is why it is also the most populated area and has a busier pace than the rest of the region.
Staying in quieter regions such as Araçatiba or Praia Vermelha
The regions of Araçatiba and Praia Vermelha give easy access to some of the most preserved beaches on the island’s western coast, as well as trips to the Paradise Islands, Lagoa Verde, Gruta do Acaiá, Aventureiro and other less crowded corners.
Araçatiba is the second-largest tourist village after Abraão, and although it has no commercial center as such, it has many local markets for provisions and a great range of pousadas and restaurants.
Many travelers choose to combine both regions during the same stay to discover different landscapes and experiences within Ilha Grande.
